Virupaksha Temple
Hampi's natural terrain served as a very good natural fortification for the Vijayanagara empire in 15-16th century. Despite that, it was invaded later in the 16th century. Situated on the Deccan Plateau in southern India, this Virupaksha Temple is the only one which is presently "active" - a place of worship for devout Hindus, locally.
The rest of the architecture in the vicinity lies in ruins. Even so, the grandeur and splendour of a once-powerful as well as culturally-inclined dynasty are visible in every stone of this now-protected World Heritage site. |
