One of countless piles of Korla Pandit LPs. Korla was a mainstay of eartly daytime TV, with a 15 minute program that hypnotized housewives cross-country. Billed as a mysterious Eastern Valentino/Liberace, his initial output is epic organ music, exotic themes and pounding rhythms; must've been quite an escape to witness the heavy-lidded one perform whilst trapped in small-town 1950's America. By the time this record was made Korla was performing at lounges in LA (I gather), and the exotica theme had given way to gaudy covers of modern day hits like "spinning wheel", which is on this particular disc. An LA local who knew Korla swears that Korla pulled a Babs Gonzales - that is to say that he was actually not of Indian descent but rather used this alibi to 'pass' into the broader culture. Another astute Cookie selection. |
