Mark's latest "painting"

"This is a photo of my most recent painting. 3 feet by 4 feet on raw canvas. Acrylic stains that are soaked into the canvas itself."

He uses diluted acrylic stains to get that see-through effect . . . he usually uses raw canvas.

He has been going through a lot lately, I think it shows in this painting.

UPDATED March 8:

The artist's description of how he does it and what he was painting:

"The method of stain painting was developed mainly by Morris Louis in the mid fifties. It involves using a wetting agent (water tension breaker) in the paint so it doesn't bead up on the raw canvas but immediately soaks in. The paint is diluted with water and acrylic medium, matte finish in my case, a flow release (wetting agent) is added.

"I pour the paint on the canvas which is mounted on stretcher bars laying flat on the floor or work table. I use a variety of squirt bottles, cups and pans to get different kinds of pours and shapes. I also tilt the canvas to move the paint around or to let the excess paint flow off the canvas onto the floor. The acrylic medium dries waterproof and you then can pour another stain on top of it to build transparencies.

"I work by intuition. I make a pour and let it dry. Then it suggests my next pour. I only have a vague preconception at the beginning but I usually don't adhere to it because the painting begins to "build itself" and I take a Zen like approach from there. Of course then I am subject to putting together something that can be revealing about my state of mind or my more subconscious meanderings. This can be disturbing at times and but also transcendent.

"I had the preconception of a thunder storm that I went through in eastern Colorado two years ago. It was a terrifying event. I wanted to use that as a metaphor for a heaven and earth kind of starting point. In the upper portion is the more spiritual plane. If you look on the upper right of the red portion you will see the big faint white shadow of a seated naked fat man facing away from you and to the left a little. That has come to represent Buddha for me. He appears to be addressing some monks or whatever but it is hard to see that part. Below is the earth which is mountains and forest, which references the Etna Summit area near Black Bear Ranch when I was at that commune in 69 (http://www.blackbearranch.org/main_page.html.) The rain/lightning portions represent natural chaos that moves across our reality indiscriminately and the amazing face that just appeared out of nowhere there on the right was a surprise. Maybe a coyote/raven/devil like character being swept along in the motion.

"I don't feel any anger in the thing. More just an acceptance of huge natural forces that make up our reality that we have no control over."
