Christmas present for my son, I taught him the basics of Chess at about 7 years old and never won another game from him. This chess set however cannot be played. Here is how it was created. I am not very good with dates but you know the day...it was the day President Bush declared war on Iraq.
As I sat and watched what was to happen on the TV, my hands twisted clay into shapes. As I prayed for peace the small clay figures began to look like praying people in robes and varying in stance. After three days and enough of the war, there were plenty of pieces for a chess set. Like all creatures under God, each chessman is unique.
Next the pieces were fired and painted with several coats of gold enamel paint, yet still one can see my fingerprints. At this point it became the game that really was a concept. The game could not be played when all the chessmen were gold. This war cannot be won without prayer.
Yesterday I glued down all the chessmen to the playing board. My sweetie is making a display case for it. I cannot remember if I have ever given my son one of my art pieces but I think he will like this one.
("Don’t tell him now…I want it to be a surprise!" She said with tongue in cheek.) |
