celticvoice OUCH! I bet you want that DONE! Is this in VT? I tho't you might like the might biltmore better, at least it has CHARACTER! It was built by Vanderbilt; "they say" (one site said) that the "Bilt" comes from the Dutch "bildt" as in "open" or open space, like lotsa land around it. It's quite a tourist thing now, even has it's own inn and an equestrian center with clinics, and stuff . . . pretty setting.
celticvoice from www.castles.org: "The most famous American Castle would have to be George Washington Vanderbilt's "country retreat", Biltmore. A 250 room French Renaissance Chateau surrounded by 8,000 acres of forest, located near the Blue Ridge Mountains in Asheville, North Carolina. Biltmore is the largest private residence in the United States, housing thousands of priceless antiques and works of art, which Mr. Vanderbilt collected during his many travels. The creation of the name Biltmore came from Bildt, the Dutch town where his ancestors originated from, and "more" an old English word for open, rolling land, which is so appropriate for the lay of the land of this estate. Mr. Vanderbilt's vision was to create a self sustaining property, which he accomplished through his forestry program and Biltmore Dairy Farms. After six years of construction Biltmore opened on Christmas Eve 1895 with many marvels of modern technology. He married Edith in 1898 and they welcomed one daughter, Cornelia wh
celticvoice " He married Edith in 1898 and they welcomed one daughter, Cornelia who eventually had two sons. One of whom currently manages the Biltmore Estate." Oops, I misremembered!
celticvoice Re your comment on Donahue; I had a metal pipe for my wood stove and it was fine. Not very pretty but jes' fine. Our house has a mortar brick chimney with a metal lining, and it was for a woodburner furnace. Used now by our gas furnace, and, if we ever get there, perhaps a woodburner upstairs too.
celticvoice Ok, so I'm coming back a lot - I saw dribbleglass.com again on Jim's, went there and read this and thought of you, poor guy! "I live in a crummy apartment. Once, opportunity knocked and a wall collapsed." (Scott Roeben)
celticvoice You should see the original 'autofocus oops' shot . . . I was shooting the birds, and it "caught sight" of the window screen - I hate the front window screens but gotta have 'em, super heavy duty screen, very good stuff). SO I have a beaut macro of a window screen! Yeehaw. The back window is dual pane and plate glass so no screen required (which is one reason among several why I, ME wanted the feeders in the back but they were up before I was given a vote so . . . I'll move 'em later). All of the bird spa shots are also thru the screens, but the autofocus never has done that (just missed a bird and caught the gravel or a tree instead). But then I know the focal setting - 9.1 meters! So I can do it manually.
