Actually, no, excessive rolling can twist them, which is the biggest danger when a horse gets HORSE colic (they roll to try to ease the gas pains). . . what would happen if he laid flat out too long is his lungs would not expand fully and he would either get pnuemonia and/or suffocate. They MUST be able to "sit on their chests". Horses rarely lay flat except for brief (usually 15 minutes max) periods, except for babies who don't have the weight problem . . .

Edema can be caused by many things in horse or humans or any mmamal; in Boss's case not an infection but simply trauma (falling) and the wound - the body issues fluid (blood and water kind of) to surround and stiffen the point of pain to keep him still. Unfortunately, the body can "over do" it - in his case os much so that he could not walk. His gash (see FocalAnLae for blurred shots of it (it's gory) was VERY deep . . .

Now the edema is draining, great pockets of it, gooey, icky stuff, but not smelly or anything. What is left is liquifying so the body can resorb it. Yes I was worried out of my MIND.

No, never saw it, too much press, too close a story. Did you like it? I heard it was fantastic and several acive and former cowhands from WY confirmed it does happen and the movie was perfect. One of them moved to ?Laramie? and became . . . a hairdresser. TRUTH. More than that, I didn't need to know. To many "goodbyes" in my life already. "I hate goodbyes" (Nash Bridges) Great that it was made though.
